The Thomas group has been investigating metal-metal interactions in early/lateheterobimetallic complexes as a method for tuning redox potentials and uncovering new types of s bond activation processes and catalytic applications. Dative metal-metal interactions between Co and Zr in representative Co/Zr heterobimetallic complexes have been shown to shift the CoI/-I reduction potential by ca. 1 V, and the resulting coordinatively unsaturated reduced complexes are reactive towards a wide variety of s bonds. Examples of R-X and E-H bond activation (E = O, S, N, Si) and these reactions will be discussed in the context of catalytic organic transformations. In addition, energy-relevant small molecule activation reactions involving carbon dioxide will be discussed.
