Conscientious attention to laboratory safety should be a habit.  Developing a campus culture of safety requires that leadership be shown by many people � administrators, faculty PIs, and every lab worker.  Each constituent must �buy in� and demonstrate their commitment via personal practice.  UC San Diego has a layered approach to laboratory safety, so that every constituent knows safe laboratory practices are a priority at all levels of campus.  In this talk I will highlight the infrastructure in place for the undergraduate chemistry teaching labs, and how the safety climate is set for the students, TAs, staff, and faculty.  The push to institutionalize the expectations came from management as well as the idealistic and responsible students.  This push from different directions makes it nearly impossible for any scientist to ignore safe practices in his/her own work.
