In the nucleophilic substitution reaction of hydroxy benzoic acids with trans-1,4-dibromo-2-butene (DBB), both phenoxide and carboxylate anions take part in the reaction nearly simultaneously thereby forming poly(ether ester) which carry unsaturated double (=) bonds in every repeating unit. Reduction of double bond (=)  leads to the formation of novel polymeric materials. For example, reduction of the reaction product between 4-hydroxybenzoic acid and trans-1,4-dobromo-but-2-ene leads to the formation of poly(butylenes-4-hydroxybenzoate), (PB-4-HB) which has structural similarity with poly(butyleneterephthalate) (PBT) except that a carboxylate unit in the latter has been replaced by ether linkage in the former. Such substitutions cause interesting property changes in the polymer. The reduction of unsaturated polymer improved the thermal stability and also caused changes in morphology and solubility characteristics.
