A novel synthetic route towards polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) based shape amphiphiles was developed. Via the combination of the copper-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC) and the thiol-ene �click� reactions, chemical linkage between a functionalized POSS cage and a linear polystyrene (PS) chain was achieved in a highly efficient manner. Moreover, the location where the POSS cage was tethered to the PS chain (chain-end or in-chain modification) could be adjusted by the use of various controlled polymerization methods, such as atom-transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and anionic polymerization. The resulted shape amphiphiles bear both chemical and geometric amphiphilicity and thus are expected to generate rich self-assembly behaviors in both solution and the bulk states.
