ULIS was found to be useful for polymerizing acrylic (AA) and methacrylic (MAA) acids in the free carboxylic acid form. AB type block copolymers, AB type random copolymers as well as ABC type random terpolymers with AA as one of the components were made. The yield of copolymers depended on the mode of addition of monomers, reaction time, etc. Through ULIS promoted ATRP it was also possible to make superabsorbent polymers. Since the copper salt employed in the polymerization was extremely low, the polymers were bright white to pale yellow in color depending on the composition. Copolymers of methacrylic acid were generally pale yellow in color.
