A series of semi-fluorinated aromatic ether polymers with pendant triarylamine (TAA) units in the polymer backbone have been prepared and characterized. Polycondensation reactions were performed between triarylamine bisphenols and commercially available trifluorovinyl ether (TFVE) or between triarylamine bisphenols and commercial octafluorocyclopentene monomers. New TAA-based TFVE monomers were also synthesized and polymerized via the classic [2 + 2] cyclodimerization to form perfluorocyclobutane (PFCB) aryl ether polymers. Majority of the polymers exhibit transparent film-forming properties with high thermal stability and are potential candidates for optical devices. The polymers were characterized by 1H, 13C and 19F NMR spectroscopy, MALDI, GPC, DSC and TGA analysis. Post-functionalization of the polymers was also explored to demonstrate the versatility in tuning the electronic and mechanical properties of the polymers. This has been demonstrated by exploring the latent reactivity of the TAA backbone which can lead to appending flexible groups as well donor/acceptor functionalities for variable electronic applications.
