Metal organic framework (MOFs) materials have become a topic of intense interest over the past decade due to their enormous potential for applications in sensing and detection, magnetism, catalysis, gas storage, separation, and chiral recognition. Among numerous useful features of MOFs, gas storage and separation are perhaps by far the most intensively explored properties because of their broadly tunable surface area, pore volume, pore size and shape. A proper, state-of-the-art  textural characterization of MOFs is crucial for assessing the suitabality of MOFs for such applications. Hence, in the this lecture we will focus on important aspects concerning (i) assessing the underlying mechanism of adsorption/desorption in MOFs , (ii) surface area, pore size and porosity characterization, and (iii) interpretation of low- and high pressure adsorption data of gases which are of of interest for gas storage application (e.g. hydrogen, methane, carbon dioxide).Within this context we will also focus on the importance of choosing correct experimental conditons and proper adsorptives (e.g. argon, nitrogen or,carbon dioxide) for obtaining acurate adsorption data for a comprehensive characterization including the determination of the isosteric heat of adsorption.
