I will review the theory of glassy states of hard spheres that is based on the replica method: this theory gives predictions on their structure --mainly the pair correlation function g(r)-- and thermodynamics --in particular the equation of state of the glass. Because this theory is based on mean field concepts, it is interesting to consider the large dimensional limit where the theory is expected to be exact. I will show that in dimensions between two and twelve the predictions of the theory can be successfully compared with numerical simulations. I will discuss the limit of large dimension where an exact solution is possible.
