Control of polymer phase structure and morphology can give rise to films with unusual transport behavior. One example of this is deformed and heat set �hard elastic� polypropylene, leading to microporous structures. A second example is the novel polymer  HIQ (p-Hydroxy benzoic acid, Isophthalic acid, hydroQinone) that can be processed into either liquid crystalline or isotropic phase films with vapor barrier properties that differ by more than an order of magnitude. Processing of these films into controlled morphologies will be discussed with emphasis on controlling the gas transport of the resulting films.
