One of the key lessons I learned as a graduate student in Benny Freeman's research group was that creativity in research results from applying knowledge learned in other fields, through an understanding of the relevant fundamental chemical or physical processes.  In this talk, I will briefly discuss how my research as a graduate student has led to our current work at NIST in nanoparticle synthesis and characterization.  Specifically, the choice of organic stabilizers used in solution-based nanoparticle synthesis has historically been through a trial-and-error approach.  To move beyond this approach, we aim to understand the role of organic stabilizer chemistry, including molecule size, functional group types, and metal complexation strength, in producing specific synthesized metallic nanoparticle characteristics, such as size, suspension stability, and morphology.
