Modern �cool roofing� systems depend mainly on their surface spectral properties (emissivity and reflectivity) for their energy saving performance.   Polymeric materials generally have a very high emissivity, and can make a minor contribution to the solar reflectivity, but in terms of their potential for long-term energy savings, their �stay-clean� properties are also important.    We will discuss recent work on identifying the sources of �dirt pickup� on roof coatings, and strategies that can be used to retain cool roof properties and extend the service life of roofing materials.
