Nitren, a strongly alkaline solution consisting of tris(2-aminoethyl)amine (abbreviated as tren = N[CH2CH2NH]3) and nickel (II) hydroxide in a molar ratio of 1:1, can dissolve xylan and cellulose by coordinative binding of the OH groups in the C2 and C3 position of the anhydro sugars. Compared to cellulose the complexation of xylan is favoured at Nitren concentrations below 7%.  In previous years the upgrading of paper grade pulps to dissloving pulps by selective extraction of xylan was intensively investigated. The process can provide polymeric xylan as a by-product. The nitren extracted pulps were characterized on molecular and supramolecular level in order to evaluate their physical and chemical properties.  Now this study was extended applying nitren for the extraction of dissolving pulps in order to improve their purity. This study should as well help to understand the effect of residual xylan on dissolving pulp properties.  In the presentation the effect of nitren extraction on paper grade and dissolving pulp will be compared and the quality of the various pulps will be evaluated. In addition characteristics and dissolution properties of nitren extracted dissolving pulps in NaOH will be discussed.
