One of the most dramatic roles of protein association occurs in the process of self-assembly that is ubiquitous among envelope proteins of pathogens such as bacteria and viruses. Such surface exposed, self-organizing biomolecules also tend to be immunogenic and are often good candidates to express recombinantly and use as antigens in vaccines.  Efforts to express, purify and formulate a fusion protein for a molecularly defined Leshmaniasis vaccine will be presented, with the role of measuring and controlling protein properties such as variants of size highlighted in the development process.
