Oxidation of manganese(II) is slow under ambient conditions and, therefore, cycling of environmental manganese requires catalysis by bacteria and fungi for manganese oxide formation.  This presentation will explore the mechanisms of formation of manganese oxides in aquatic systems, including the role of manganese(III) as a transient intermediate and the enzyme systems that catalyze the oxidation.
