Design and synthesis of vanadium complex catalysts for olefin insertion/metathesis reactions attract considerable attention due to their unique characteristics (notable reactivity toward olefins) observed in the classical Ziegler type catalysts.  We focus on synthesis and reaction chemistry of (imido)vanadium(V)-alkylidene complexes containing anionic donor ligands or the alkyl-alkylidene complexes.  We demonstrated that these alkylidene complexes are highly effective for ring-opening metathesis polymerization of cyclic olefins.  We recently demonstrated that certain (arylimido)vanadium(V)-alkylidenes containing 1,3-imidazolin-2-iminato ligand induced 1,2-C-H bond activation of benzene affording the phenyl complexes and the further reaction afforded diphenyl complexes probably via vanadium(V)-benzyne intermediate, that could be isolated as the PMe3 adduct from the reaction mixture.  More recent results concerning reaction chemistry of our alkylidene complexes will be presented in the symposium.
