Macrocyclization has been demonstrated to control metal binding for a wide range of host compounds.  The amino terminal copper and nickel binding (ATCUN) motif is an N-terminal tripeptide found in human serum albumin and other proteins.  We have applied macrocyclic constraints to the ATCUN motif to explore how conformation of the macrocycle controls metal binding and catalysis.  Several novel ATCUN macrocycles have been synthesized and analyzed spectroscopically, electrochemically, and functionally as catalysts.  These compounds are being developed as simple, modular, and chiral catalysts for a variety of synthetic reactions.
