Hybrid Li-air batteries with aqueous catholytes have emerged as an alternative to the all aprotic electrolyte Li-air batteries. The latter have drawbacks of solid lithium oxide deposition in the cathode pores, moisture and carbon dioxide contamination, and electrochemical stability of aprotic electrolytes. Although aqueous-based systems do not suffer much from those problems, there are technical challenges in the development of hybrid Li-air batteries. This talk is first aimed at giving an overview of the state-of-the-art development in hybrid Li-air batteries. It will then present research results from the speaker's own group in the development of hybrid Li-air batteries, especially those involving sulfuric acid as cathode electrolyte.
