Carbon-coating metal oxides, and other materials, has been shown to provide protection from decomposition and deactivation in aqueous and acidic environments. Previously, MgO has been carbon-coated with resorcinol or gaseous hydrocarbons as the carbon precursors. In this current study we have carbon-coated MgO using sugars and other green carbon sources. Sugars, such as sucrose, have shown to be an effective reagent for the carbon-coating of other ceramic and composite materials such as MnO2, LiCoO2, and LiFePO4. Carbon loading was systematically varied for each precursor and samples were characterized by XRD, TEM, BET and Raman. Oxide surface site availability and strength was determined by TPD as well as measured through catalytic activity in a standard reaction. Stability of the MgO in aqueous and acidic environments was followed by measuring pH changes upon addition of carbon coated MgO.
