Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are materials composed of organic linkers connecting metal centers, extending in a periodic fashion1. Properties such as surface potential and surface area, essential for efficient gas capture2, can be systematically tuned via the choice of linker and metal.MOFs often employ carboxylate linkers, which have well understood topologies, resulting in desirable properties but many lack necessary water stability for flue gas capture. Conversely, phosphonate monoesters are a relatively unexplored class of linkers but have recently gained attention because of the ester, which can shield hydrolytically unstable coordination bonds as well as modify the surface potentials and surface areas of a MOF3.
