Hybrid coordination frameworks are interesting due to their structural and functional versatility. Developing new organic ligands, exploring different reaction conditions, and testing different metal cations, such as lanthanides, has lead and will continue to lead to novel structures. We have explored several facets related to the preparation of hybrid frameworks, such as synthesizing new multifunctional ligands, including macrocyclic molecules, and complexes and frameworks containing lanthanide ions. In this work, some of these results will be presented, with emphasis on some of the unique properties displayed by these lanthanide-containing frameworks and potential applications. In particular, we will discuss the reversible hydration-dehydration of a Sm(Cu)-cucurbituryl compound, and the use of luminescence spectroscopy to probe its structural changes. The luminescent properties of new thiazolothiazoledicarboxylate frameworks containing different lanthanides, as well as mesoporous particles containing europium, will also be presented.
