Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIF's), a subclass of metal organic frameworks (MOF's), have many interesting characteristics including, high porosity, high surface area, chemical stability and ease of functionalization. ZIF's can be employed as building blocks through an organized arrangement onto various substrates. These building blocks have potential to assemble into novel systems with 2D or 3D structural entities exploited for applications such as molecular sieve membranes. We studied the effect of the assembly of various crystal sizes of substituted imidazolate framework-1 (SIM-1) onto functionalized glass, followed by a solvothermal treatment forming SIM-1 membranes.   We also investigated the effect of crystal size for the fabrication of a free-standing functionalized SIM-1 membrane for its molecular sieving capabilities.
