Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are generally explored for use in gas adsorption and separation. More recently, MOFs have been researched for biomedical uses. This work focuses on incorporating a covalently bound nitric oxide (NO) donor, called a diazeniumdiolate (NONOate), to Cu-TDPAT. NO is naturally produced in the body, and while it's involved in numerous physiological functions, there is a large research focus on its uses for nonthrombogenic devices and wound healing. Most NO-releasing MOFs, zeolites, and other porous materials involve coordination of NO to a metal in the framework. A covalently bound donor group provides greater control over storage and delivery rate. We have shown that by using a high pressure of NO, NONOates will form on the framework of Cu-TDPAT, and it is possible to release NO through humidity and increased temperature. The storage capacities of NO coordinated to the framework, as well as covalently bound NONOates, are also explored.
