Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted significant attention due to their ultrahigh surface and wide range of potential applications such as gas storage and separation, sensing, and catalysis. In the majority of cases, especially when the linker used to construct the framework is large, high degrees of catenation are routinely encountered. Non-catenated systems should have larger channels and pores than their catenated counterparts, which is of importance in applications such as catalysis and high pressure gas storage. While obtaining phase-pure, non-interpenetrated MOFs is a challenging task, few strategies have been explored in the literature. In this work we present a new approach for the control over catenation in a paddle-wheel metal-organic frameworks. Two non-catenated materials were synthesized via our approach,   while the de novo synthesized analogues can only be obtained as 2-fold catenated frameworks.
