Engaging undergraduates, particularly those from under-represented groups, in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) research opportunities early in their academic training can have a profound impact on their future career pathways.   I will share personal experiences related to how undergraduate research and mentoring in polymer science and engineering paved the way for my academic appointment as a professor in the polymer field.  I will also discuss the role of mentoring and advocacy as a key aspect of broadening participation in STEM disciplines.
