Atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) is anefficient controlled radical polymerization systems relying on intermittentactivation of dormant alkyl halides to propagating radicals, especially in thepresence of Cu complexes with various N-based ligands. New ATRP techniquespermit reduction of Cu concentration to ppm level in the presence of reducingagents, visible light or electrical current. ATRP of (meth)acrylates, styrenes,acrylamides, acrylonitrile and other vinyl monomers provides (co) polymers in alarge range molecular weights and with controlled molecular weight distribution. Polymers can be prepared quantitatively in bulk, in solution and in dispersedmedia. Polymers with complex architecture, such as block, graft, star, gradient,hyperbranched copolymers, as well as gels and networks have been synthesized.The (co)polymers made by ATRP can be used as components of various advancedmaterials. Design, synthesis, characterization and applications of variouspolymeric materials enabled by ATRP will be presented.
