Postdoctoral research appointments provide a person with the opportunity to do one of two things: further specialize in a field of study or develop expertise in a second field of study. My postdoctoral research experience in chemical education research was aimed at the latter. As a graduate student, I work on a qualitative understanding of the practice of organic chemistry research through interviews with practicing chemists and undergraduate students. Then as a postdoctoral researcher, I set out to learn advanced statistical analysis techniques for exploring educational research questions. My combined understanding of qualitative and quantitative methodologies has led to a current goal of evaluating innovative teaching strategies through mixed-research methods.
