We have utilized nanomaterials and light for applications in energy, environment, and health.  For energy, we have prepared nanostructured arrays to improve the efficiency of sunlight to electricity conversion.  These composite arrays, made of both semi-conductor and metallic components, enhance photovoltaic efficiency by improved electron transport and increased effective light pathlengths created by scattering effects.  For environment, we have utilized nanomaterials as photocatalysts for degradation of oil from spills.  Photocatalysts can enhance both alkane and aromatic transformations in order to speed the degradation of oil in aquatic systems.  For health, we have prepared quantum dot based nanomaterials for early detection of important biomarkers, such as those present in breast cancer.  Simultaneous detection of multiple biomarkers at low concentrations is made possible by the use of highly fluorescent quantum dots coupled to an immunoassay platform.  All of these projects have been coupled to outreach programs to stimulate participation from underrepresented groups.
