Bacterial Nanocellulose (BNC) combines, in an exciting manner, significant structural elements and properties of the well-known plant celluloses with the unique features of nanoscale materials. The mode of biofabrication of BNC endows it with great potential in novel materials. The direct formation of a three-dimensional object from cellulose by a biofabrication process is unique in the production of cellulose materials. The nanostructure, the morphological similarities with body's extracellular matrix collagen, and the water-holding ability make BNC attractive for biomimetic cell immobilization and ingrowth in the sense of a bioactive implant material. The lecture describes recent results in the design of layered and channelled BNC architectures by controlling the biofabrication process and by the development of novel postprocessing procedures. The features of the prepared flat and tubular implant materials are described by their interactions with living cells as well as by animal studies.
