It is clear that the worlds major oil fields have been in production decline for decades and these production declines are simply not being met by new crude oil production technologies.  Heavy oil and oil sands utilization is ramping up, but the rate is also insufficient to replace production losses. Sustainable and renewable alternatives to petroleum are therefore critically needed to fill future gaps in supply of transportation fuels and chemical feedstocks.We have successfully converted bioderived molecules into a range of n-alkanes in a high yielding and selective manner under mild conditions.  This approach has been extended to allow us to convert oligosaccharides directly into branched hydrocarbons and we have also successfully derived branched C11 alkane from a potato to illustrate the feasibility of this approach with regards to potential biomass sources.
