Chemical Looping Combustion (CLC) is an emerging technology for clean combustion of fuel. While CLC is typically used for total oxidation, the relative supply of fuel and oxygen carrier can in principle be used to selectively steer the reaction towards partial or total oxidation. Here, we report on a novel process utilizing CLC principles for syngas generation via controlling the oxygen utilization, i.e. Chemical Looping Partial Oxidation of Methane (CLPOM). Ni-, Fe- and Fe/Ni- based carriers were tested for CLPOM in fixed-bed reactor tests. Based on the product selectivity during reduction, a suitable carrier conversion window for CLPOM was determined. Fe showed highest selectivity for syngas but suffers from low reactivity, while Ni is highly active but almost entirely unselective to syngas. Alloying Fe with Ni allows for a compromise between reactivity and syngas selectivity. Our preliminary results thus show that CLPOM is a promising candidate for syngas generation.
