Chemical looping Combustion (CLC) is a novel combustion technology for efficient and clean combustion with inherent CO2 separation. While Nickel-based carriers show excellent performance in CLC, they suffer from high cost and toxicity issues. The relative abundance, low cost and low toxicity makes Fe-based oxygen carriers of great interest for CLC. Here, we demonstrate that the low activity of Fe can be strongly improved via alloying with Ni.  Such bimetallic Fe/Ni carriers show increased reactivity in thermogravimetric tests and improved fuel conversion and selectivity for total oxidation in fixed-bed reactor CLC cycles. Remarkably, the stability and oxygen carrying potential of these carriers can be further improved by using of reducible oxides in place of conventional, non-reducible oxides (such as alumina) as support matrix for the active metal component, despite the fact that the reducible oxides themselves do not show any significant oxygen carrying capacity.
