Chemical looping combustion (CLC) is a technology in which the oxygen required for the fuel combustion reaction is supplied by a metal oxide. IFP Energies Nouvelles (IFPEN) and Total have established a joint R&D project to develop CLC technology since 2008. As part of this collaboration several cold models and pilot plants have been built at IFPEN facilities, among them a 10 kWthcontinuous pilot plant. This prototype is composed of three interconnected fluidized bed reactors, which are separated by loop seals to prevent gas leakage between reaction zones. The solids circulation rate is controlled by three non-mechanical L-valves permitting excellent pilot operability and good control of experimental parameters such as OC oxidation degree and fuels residence time.Since start-up, in 2010, three types of fuels have been tested. First the experimental rig was validated on gaseous feed (methane and syngas). After this, a large testing campaign was accomplished over medium volatile South African bituminous coal.This paper will present part of the major results of a testing campaign carried out on petcoke in the 10 kWthCLC pilot. Similar to the coal combustion, gasification of solid phase is the limiting step in direct petcoke chemical looping combustion. Higher sulphur content, lower volatile and ash content present the principal difference of these two solid fuels. To get a better insight into petcoke combustion, impact of different operating parameters are presented in this study including:Petcoke nature;Temperature effect;Petcoke residence time impact;Steam partial pressure effect.This study provides a basis for development of petcoke combustion in CLC process which presents a high potential as an energy production source with CO2 capture.
