Porous metal organic frameworks (MOFs) are often targeted for applications in selective separation of energy-related gases. The adsorption process behind this functionality involves specific interactions between components of the framework and gas molecules contained within it. In this work, structurally sensitive spectroscopy methods, namely X-ray absorption spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy, are used to interrogate these host-guest interactions on the molecular level. We focus on MOFs containing coordinatively unsaturated metals and dynamic framework flexibility. These in-situ spectroscopy studies together reveal a composite picture of the changes in local metal coordination geometries as well as the participation of the organic linker components upon exposure to controlled gas environments.
