In this presentation, I will discuss several recently proposed new ideas, which bring unique advantages to fuel reforming for distributed, mobile, and portable applications. These include the Direct Droplet Impingement Reactor (DDIR) optimized for high power density hydrogen generation from liquid fuels, and the variable volume CHAMP (CO2/H2 Active Membrane/Piston) reactor, which is capable of a robust operation and an effective management of inherent heat/mass transfer limitations over a wide range of throughputs as well as enables a new mode of regenerative fuel processing with improved energy efficiency when used in combination with integrated CO2 capture. Not only is the CHAMP class of reactors fundamentally more efficient in fuel reforming as compared to its conventional continuous-flow counterparts, but can also be coupled to the DDIR and CO2 capture technologies to enable high power density generation of hydrogen along an environmentally-sustainable route with an option for energy-efficient greenhouse gas emission management.
