Escherichia coli and Clostridium perfringens are indicators for faecal contamination in the aquatic environment. This study evaluated the inactivation of total coliforms, E. coli, and C. perfringens present in a treated wastewater by photolysis (UV), peroxidation (H2O2), and UV/H2O2. The Quanty-Tray�/2000 (IDEXX Laboratories, Incorporation) and DRCM (Differential Reinforced Clostridium Medium) method were used to evaluate the inactivation. The peroxidation process (30 mg L-1) was inefficient for inactivation of the three species of bacteria. The UV radiation (70 mJ cm-2) inactivated 5 log of total coliforms, 4 log of E. coli, and 2 log of C. perfringens. Advanced oxidation process was able to inactivate =1 MNP/100 mL of total coliforms and E. coli, and 3 log of C. perfringens The application of UV/H2O2 increased the level of bacteria inactivation; this is of fundamental importance for C. perfringens, that survives for long time in environmental samples because they are spore formers.
