The deactivation of antibiotics from wastewater is important because of its significant impact on health. A proposed method of antibiotic removal is known as the Advanced Oxidation Process (AOP) with sulfate radical (SO4-�). This study investigates the kinetics and reaction mechanisms between sulfate radical and the antibiotic. The tetracycline and sulfonamide class of antibiotics with sulfate radical were examined. The reaction mechanism rate constants were analyzed and the average rate constant of the mechanism for the tetracycline class with SO4-� was determined to be (1.11 � 0.88) x 109 M-1s-1. The average rate constant for the sulfonamide class with SO4-� was determined to be (3.98 � 0.49) x 109 M-1s-1. The similarities in reaction rate constants between tetracycline and sulfonamide class with sulfate radical suggest that oxidation by the sulfate radical will occur at a location that is similar to each antibiotic molecule within the class.
