In this study, the magnetic susceptibility and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were implemented to monitor the cation-ordering and to achieve the fundamental understanding on mechanism of first cycle irreversible capacity loss and voltage fade issue in Li-rich 0.5Li2MnO3.0.5LiNi0.375Co0.25Mn0.375O2 cathodes. Magnetic susceptibility measurements were performed in field and zero field cooling method (H=100 Oe and T = 2K- 300K) from the cathodes that are delithiated/lithiated between 2.5-4.8V @10mA/g for several cycles. The oxidation states of transition metal (TM) ions were deduced from the magnetic susceptibility data to monitor the redox processes involving Li extraction and insertion. Magnetization and magnetic susceptibility curves were utilized to understand different magnetic interactions among the TM ions. The single crystal selected area electron diffraction and high-resolution TEM were collected from each specimen to monitor the phase change occur during delithiation/lithiation.
