In most industries including refining, chemicals and alternative fuels, the safety specifications and standards are usually geared towards commercial operations and as a result are ill-equipped to efficiently handle the health and safety concerns that are posed by pilot and demonstration scale units. In academic settings, moving from bench scale to pilot scale is overseen by the primary researcher who does not have the safety net of a dedicated safety team or vetted safety procedures to help identify and cope with the pitfalls associated with the process. The purpose of this presentation is to offer a methodology for defining safety concerns in pilot plants and a process for developing an appropriate design for handling those concerns.
