Recent developments of fluorescence chemosensors in our laboratory has demonstrated that the 2-(3-(2-aminoethylsulfanyl)propylsulfanyl)ethanamine acyclic ionophore can be effectively utilized for selective Hg(II) sensing. Appropriate combinations of an ionophore and various types of fluorophores were investigated and several novel optical sensors are presented here. Sensors I  -VI  consist of 2-(3-(2-aminoethylsulfanyl)propylsulfanyl)ethanamine covalently bound to one or two units of pyrenylacetamide, napthalimide, dansyl, diphenylmaleimide, 7-nitrobenzo-2-oxa-1,3-diazolyl and rhodamine fluorophore(s), respectively. The sensors were prepared in a conventional two- or three-step synthesis and their fluoroionophoric and chromophoric properties toward various transition metal, alkali, and alkali earth ions were investigated. The sensors provided the change in fluorescence signals in the visible regions and offered high Hg2+-selectivity in the presence of competitive ions such as Ag+, Cu2+, Ba2+, Ca2+, Cd2+, Co2+, Fe2+, Fe3+, Mn2+, Na+, Ni2+, Pb2+ and Zn2+.These optical sensors exhibited detection limits in the range of 2-140 mg/L which are sufficient for the detection of sub-micromolar concentrations of Hg2+ ions found in drinking water, environmental and many biological systems such as edible fish. Moreover, sensors V  and VI  established chromogenic behaviors toward Hg2+ ions as evidenced by �naked-eye� noticeable color changes of the solutions from yellow to pink and colorless to red color, respectively.
