The synthesis of useful chemicals and fuels using carbon dioxide as a C1 building block is an attractive approach to mollify its harmful environmental effects. Reductive splitting and reductive coupling are two important pathways for the activation of CO2. We are investigating the cooperative reactivity of dinuclear metal complexes for activation of carbon dioxide and heteroallenes. Redox non-innocent bis(imino)pyridine open chain ligands, and rigid macrocyclic and xanthene ligands are synthesized. Dinuclear nickel and copper complexes with different intranuclear distances are prepared for reductive coupling or reductive splitting of carbon dioxide or carbon disulfide. The effect of various substituents on the pyridine moiety of bis(imino)pyridine ligands on the coordination chemistry and reactivity will be presented.
