Coordinating the Eu3+ to selected phosphine oxides are thought to play a double role of replacing the H2O quencher as well as acting as an effective sensitizer. A new lanthanide complex containing an N-based auxiliary ligand and a group 11 transition metal complex was synthesized and studied through X-ray crystallography, luminescence and other spectroscopic techniques. Structural analysis of [(Eu(H2O)4((Au(CN)2)2(Terpy)] Au(CN)2�2(TPPO) indicates that the compound crystallizes in a monoclinic system with space group P 21/c and unit cell parameters of a = 16.9623(3) �, b = 10.4361(19) �, c = 33.347(7) �, � = 91.280(7) �, and V = 901.51(9) �3. Photoluminescence studies show characteristic f-f emissions of the Eu3+ ion where energy transfer from the terpy ligand enhanced the lanthanide emission. The use of various donors successfully accomplished the goal of enhancing emission through efficient sensitization.
