Glass photospheres coated with TiO2 have the distinct advantages of easy separation and recovery after treatment.  We investigated the optimal conditions for �OH generation by using response surface methodology.  The �OH yield and average rate of generation are critical parameters for practical applications of UV TiO2 photocatalysis.  In this study, terephthalic acid was used as �OH trap.  The advantage of employing terephthalic acid over other �OH traps is the selective formation of the �OH adduct, 2-hydroxy terephthalic acid.  Three independent variables concentration of glass photospheres, concentration of terephthalic acid and irradiation time were investigated.  The response surfaces of �OH yield and rate of generation indicate the optimum conditions of concentration of glass photospheres, concentration of terephthalate acid and irradiation time were 8 g/L, 4 mM, and 20 min, respectively.  Under these optimized conditions, we measured the UV TiO2 photocatalysis using glass photospheres for the degradation treatment of dimethyl phthalate.
