Kinetics of the electrochemical oxidation of phenol and intermediates formed in the presence of chloride were explored at different voltages and phenol/chloride ratios at a boron-doped diamond anode. Ionic strength was kept constant at 50 mM using combinations of sodium chloride and sulfate.  A mathematical model was developed to predict the first-order rate constants for the conversion and destruction of phenol and intermediates formed in the process. In general, results showed that at a higher applied voltage (6V vs. 4.5V) in the presence of chloride, phenol was removed faster but more chlorinated intermediates and chlorate (undesirable byproducts) were produced. Chlorate reaction rate increased as applied voltage increased. Phenol removal rate also increased with increasing chloride concentration. Intermediate product formation concentrations and rate constants varied depending on reaction conditions.
