Multiple sulfur isotopes fractionation during abiotic sulfur transformations in Yellowstone National Park geothermal springs Alexey Kamyshny, Jr., Gregory Druschel, Zahra F. Mansaray and James Farquhar Water samples from six springs and pools in the Yellowstone National Park, characterized by various pH and sulfide concentrations, were sampled. Concentrations of sulfide, sulfate and sulfide oxidation intermediates as well as multiple sulfur isotope composition of these species were analyzed. d34S values of sulfur isotope fractionation between sulfate and sulfide in most of the pools were close to the values calculated by using mixing line constructed based on the approach of Truesdell et al. (1978). Difference between ?33S values of sulfate and sulfide increased with complexity of sulfur cycling in the system. The highest difference between sulfate and sulfide ?33S values (up to 0.051�) was detected in the Cinder pool, which is characterized by the most complex sulfur cycling, involving multiple turnover steps for each sulfur atom. We propose that multiple sulfur isotope composition analysis may be related not only to the microbial processes in natural aquatic systems (Johnston et al., 2005), but as well to an abiotic sulfur transformations.
