Ruthenium based drug candidates have attracted much recent attention as less toxic alternatives to the well establised platinum derived cytotoxic agents. In the literature, cytotoxicity studies employing dicarbonylchloro(cyclopentadienyl)ruthenium complexes are scarce. In recent work, we have prepared and screened several such substituted cyclopentadienyl and indenyl ligated ruthenium complexes for use as sec-alcohol racemization catalysts in chemoenzymatic dynamic kinetic resolutions and discuss here the prospects of their potential use as cytotoxic agents.
