Ultrasonic spray pyrolysis (USP) is known to make microspheres with a narrow size distribution.  The addition of an inorganic salt to the precursor solution will either dilute the other precursors, causing each droplet to make many nanoparticles, or, at lower concentrations, create porous products by forming an in situ template which is easily dissolved away with water.  We have made use of salt-assisted USP to create both porous iron oxide spheres and porous carbon spheres with a variety of morphologies.  The porous iron oxide spheres show a potential for use in lithium ion battery anodes.  We have also made porous carbon spheres containing iron oxide nanoparticles, and their use as a combination imaging contrast/hyperthermia/controlled drug release agent is shown.
