Novel metallo-organic hybrid materials incorporating M2 quadruply bonded units have been prepared for use as photon harvesters in bulk heterojunction photovoltaic cells.  Model complexes of the formula trans-M2(O2C-R)2(O2C-L)2, where M = Mo,W, R = 2,4,6-triisopropylphenyl, and L = conjugated organic ligand, and oligomeric species of the formula [M2(O2C-R)2(O2C-X-CO2)]n where M = Mo,W, R = 2,4,6-triisopropylphenyl, and X = conjugated organic ligand will be examined.  These systems possess an intense metal-to-ligand charge transfer transition that can be tuned across the visible spectrum by selection of either the metal and/or the ligand.  The ground and excited state electronic properties are characterized using steady-state and ultrafast spectroscopic methods.  For the model complexes, a-oligothiophenes and conjugated organics with reactive terminal alkene and alkyne functionalities are used.  For the metallo-organic oligomers, a-oligothiophenes and donor/acceptor units are used.  The potential for these compounds in bulk heterojunction photovoltaic cells will be explored.
