As part our group's continuing interest in the incorporation of heavy main group centers in bifunctional ligands, a phosphinylstibine ligand featuring a dichlorostibine moiety, [o-(Ph2P)C6H4SbCl2], has been synthesized and characterized (1  , Scheme 1). This ligand displays interesting coordination behavior towards late transition metals, with the stibine moiety acting as both a Lewis acid and a weak Lewis base towards the metal center. This is illustrated by the reaction of 1   with Au(PPh3)Cl to afford the gold antimonate complex 2  via chloride transfer to the Lewis acidic antimony center. As an extension of the demonstrated Lewis acidity of this ligand, potential application of its derivatives as small anion captors will be outlined.
