Cobalt(II) complexes of porphyrins, a class of stable metalloradicals with open-shell d7 electronic structure, have emerged as a family of effective catalysts for the development of metalloradical catalysis. The Co(II)-based metalloradical catalysts have been shown to catalyze different types of atom/group transfers, such as carbene transfer and nitrene transfer reactions. With structurally tunable D2-symmetric chiral porphyrins as supporting ligands, the Co(II)-based metalloradical system has been successfully applied to catalyze a number of highly stereoselective transformations, including cyclopropanation, cyclopropenation, aziridination, amination, and other related reactions. Mechanistic studies on their distinctive radical pathways will be also presented.
