An efficient one-pot synthetic procedure has been developed via an ammonium enolate intermediate to give heterocyclic products with high diastereo- and enantioselectivity (typically >90:10 dr, up to 99% ee).  The scope and limitations of this methodology and a variety of derivatisation procedures to generate functionalised products will be discussed.
